January 20, 2018 Music from Bandcamp #3

Hi! Here is this week's selection of music randomly chosen from Bandcamp:

1) Hocus Pocus - Christel Veraart (Anchorage, Alaska)

This is a jaunty little tune. I imagine some sort of coven of good witches dancing around a fire, a magickal gathering.

2) White Oaks Grew - Timothy Donavan Russell (Springfield, Illinois)

Rhodes keyboard, ambient sounds. Slow, drifting...there were white oaks, but now it's a playground?

3) Numb - Kingsley Ibeneche (Camden, New Jersey)

Lots of little elements intertwining around this mellow R&B song. Nice composition, sweet vocals.

  1. Hi Mark,

Thanks for linking to my song! White Oaks is a mall here in Springfield, Illinois. I recorded the ambient voices in the song at the mall with binaural mics. (Listen with headphones if you haven't already.) That album (Bioregion) is hyperlocal and was for a local art show also called Bioregion. Anyway, I had in mind presenting a way of thinking about how people name things after what is dead, what they paved over. For instance, Illinois is called "the prairie state"--where prairie USED to be. Sad, but there it is. I imagine there were white oak trees where the mall was built. Thanks for listening, and I appreciate the kind link!

    Regards,
    Timothy

    1. You're welcome, Timothy! How did you get notified about this? I am posting three random recordings from bandcamp each week, glad it showed up on your web radar. Speaking of Springfield, I grew up in the Chicago area. Hiked the Lincoln Trail in Boy Scouts. I also remember seeing a tv program about a haunted Springfield nightclub. I think it was called the Lake Club. Anyhow, it was a cool 70s dramatization. Sorry for taking so long to respond, I don't always check for comments. Thanks for writing!
